They did it! Eric and his good friend Ben both finished the McDonald Forest Ultra Marathon. What that means is they ran 50km with 6800' of ascent. They met their goals and were alive at the end. They are both tough, determined and I am proud of all their training and final race day results. They did both get "chicked" and man, those women who run this race are amazing.
The stats:
Eric 4:47:37, 17th overall of 282 starters, 6th time running the race
Ben 5:49:17, finishing in the top 25% of all starters in his first-ever ultra.
Chicked: When a woman outperforms a man in a physical
activity, such as biking, hiking, or skiing, where normally a man should
outperform the woman.
Eric's comment: it was an HONOR to see Ashley Nordell (Idema) fly by me at mile 27 like I was standing still. I made a short-lived and futile attempt to stay with her, but sometimes it's OK to be chicked. Not next year, though.
